The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus is appealing to people in countries with low uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine to keep their guard up.
In a conference call at the beginning of the week, the WHO head warned that the global pandemic is not yet over despite high COVID vaccination rates in some countries.
The warning came days after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told fully vaccinated Americans they can go without masks in most places.
Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus warned that countries should remain on high alert.
“There is a huge disconnect growing where, in some countries with the highest vaccination rates, there appears to be a mindset that the pandemic is over while others are experiencing huge waves of infection. The situation in a number of countries continues to be very concerning. The pandemic is a long way far from over and it will not be over anywhere until it’s over everywhere. Even some places that have previously done very well at containing COVID-19 are seeing dramatic increases in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths,” he warned.
