WHO Head Says Caribbean Countries Need Help Now Not Next Year

Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, in addressing the virtual fifth sitting of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Assembly, recently said he welcomes the help being provided by the industrialized countries, but it can’t come soon enough.

“I welcome the announcement made by the G7 countries that together will donate 870 million doses primarily through COVAX. This is a big help but countries like yours need vaccines now, not next year,” he said.

He noted his organization is doing all it can to increase production and distribution.

Furthermore, he said countries would have to continue to use the effective tools of public health and social measures to save lives.

He said the threat of new and more transmittable variants highlights the need for COVID-19 measures to be maintained, “especially for those who are unprotected” against the virus.
