Tweets Tesla’s Musk
Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has turned to Twitter to get his fill of software engineers to speed up his company’s project to build self-guiding cars.
Mr. Musk, in the tweets appealed, for “hardcore software engineers” to work on the firm’s Autopilot software.
He made note of the fact that he will be interviewing candidates personally.
Moreover, he said that successful applicants will report directly to him as the project is “super high priority.”
Coders need not have prior experience with cars, Mr. Musk also noted in his tweet.
The Autopilot software is designed to let the Model S and Model X Tesla cars automatically steer, change lanes, and adjust speed in response to traffic.
“Ramping up the Autopilot software team at Tesla to achieve generalized full autonomy,” he noted.
This division of Tesla is responsible for the company’s Autopilot software, which is the system that turns its Model S sedan into a quasi-autonomous vehicle.
Unlike Google, Autopilot doesn’t take complete control of the car but does allow the vehicle to navigate highway traffic and road hazards.
The company’s Autopilot software uses a combination of cameras, radar, sensors, and mapping data to do its navigation.
A number of car makers including BMW and Volvo are also developing autonomous features for their cars.
According TechCrunch, Elon Musk foresees full automation coming within about three years; Autopilot is just a big first step.
