House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is set to bring a new article to the House floor as early as Monday, charging President Trump with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in encouraging a mob that went on to ransack the Capitol on Wednesday.
Several Republican leaders are also now jumping the Trump ship to join with Democrats on the article of impeachment.
The second impeachment of Donald Trump would mean he is the first President to be impeached twice.
If Mr. Trump were convicted, the Senate could vote to bar him from holding office again.
A few Republican senators have also publicly joined the multitude of calls for Mr. Trump to resign; these include Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski, and Patrick Toomey.
Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden has not opined on the subject except to say that “what the Congress decides to do is for them to decide,” as he is focusing instead on the urgency of the health and economic crises facing the country.
