Wanted Young Gifted West Indies Cricketers — that would be the headline of an advertisement if one was to use a recent article by renowned Jamaican Sports writer, Tony Becca, for an Ad copy brief.
In highlighting the need for excellent cricketers, the erstwhile sports writer pointed to the galaxy of stars West Indies once boast — players such as Garry Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Wes Hall, Lance Gibbs, Clive Lloyd, Lawrence Rowe, Alvin Kallicharran, Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Courtney Walsh, Curtley Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall, and Brian Lara.
“Simply geniuses of the bat and ball, as well, for some of them, in the field also, fielders like Roger Harper, Faoud Bacchus, and Gus Logie,” Becca recalled.
Now, Becca is sweet on the following crop of players:
1. Kraigg Brathwaite
Barbados and West Indies all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls off break. Brathwaite is the second West Indian to score two Test fifties before his 19th birthday when he made 63 (212) against India in Delhi.
2. Marlon Samuels
Samuels, though in the twilight of his career, is still good enough to be part of the Windies setup.
3. Darren Bravo
Bravo is described as a wonderful player but has had a hiatus in his career due to suspension from the game by the Windies Board. Now, with the dispute settled, one hopes to see him back at his number three position scoring runs.
4. Davendra Bishoo
Bishoo is viewed as a certainty among the spinners but ought to be used wisely by the Windies captain.
5. Shane Dowrich
Dowrich is often referred to as a wonderful and gifted wicketkeeper/batsman in the making.
6. Alzarro Joseph, Miguel Cummins, Shannon Gabriel, Delorn Johnson, Marquino Mindley, and Reynard Leveridge
According to Becca, Windies cricket is built on speed and the current cadre of young fast bowlers should be nurtured.
7. Roston Chase
Chase is viewed as a perfect find for the number six position.
8. Jermaine Blackwood
Blackwood needs to step it up a notch if he wants to secure his position and fulfill his early promise.
9. Jason Holder
Holder, the captain and fast bowler is seen as one who must be tarried with as any change would be backward at this stage.
10. Evin Lewis, Tangerine Chanderpaul, Nicolas Pooran, Kyle Hope, Anthony Alleyne, Jahmar Hamilton, and the elegant Brandon King
These are all good young players who appear capable of filling the number two, four, and maybe five positions according to Becca.
11. Shimron Hetmyer
Hetmyer is judged as ready to shine and should be given every opportunity.
12. Nikita Miller
Nikita Miller should be given another chance to prove whether or not he is good enough for next level.
Some will find it strange that Becca did not find it fit to include the young Vincentian cricketer Sunil Walford Ambris as one for the future.
Ambris has played for the Windward Islands and the Combined Campuses and Colleges in West Indian domestic cricket as well as represents the St. Lucia Zouks franchise in the Caribbean Premier League.
Ambris boasts batting average of 18.66 29.35 51.71, respectively in T20, FC, and LA. These stats are indeed not stellar performance by any means but certainly much better than some of those who are being touted.
