Reports have emerged that the Windies has named a 25-man squad that includes 11 reserves who are due to arrive in England on June 9 and will use Old Trafford as their base for training and quarantining before traveling to the Ageas Bowl.
However, it is understood that top players Darren Bravo, Keemo Paul, or Shimron Hetmeyer have all opted out of the three-Test match tour.
The names of the other selected players include Captain Jason Holder, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich, Roston Chase, Shemarh Brooks, and Rahkeem Cornwall. Nkrumah Bonner, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder, John Campbell, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach, and Jermaine Blackwood
Speaking on the Barbados radio program Mason and Guest, Chairman of selectors Roger Harper said players were given the opportunity of opting out of the squad.
When asked about the squad selected, Harper pleaded the fifth and advised that the official team will be announced in short order.
He said players have been going through their fitness routine during the lockdown period, and the selectors relied on reports from coaches and medical experts in naming the squad.
Meanwhile, in an earlier press report, ECB director of events Steve Elworthy said, “Our main objective is to deliver a safe environment for all stakeholders including players, match officials, operational staff, essential venue staff, broadcasters, and media.”
He added, “We are in daily dialogue with government and our medical team, who have been incredibly supportive during this period. These are our proposed dates, and they remain subject to UK Government approval.”
Elworthy applauded the Windies for their endeavor to ensure that the game is realized.
“We would like to thank Cricket West Indies for their co-operation and dedication in making this tour a reality, and we all look forward to the prospect of cricket returning in the coming weeks.”
