The Jamaica Tallawahs has not worn the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) crown since they walked away with the inaugural championship in 2013.
Since then, the former champion has had to watch from the sidelines Barbados Trident crowned champion in 2014 and Trinbago Knight Riders in 2015.
However, this year, the team has vowed to regain its position as the number one team in the T20 format in the Caribbean.
They begin their quest this Saturday when they take on St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Basseterre, St Kitts.
The Jamaica Tallawahs boasts a mix of youth and experience.
They have in their ranks seasoned and experienced players such as Chris Gayle, Kumar Sangakkara, Shakib Al Hasan, Andre Russell and Dale Steyn.
“In terms of being able to give us a great start in a match sense, you can’t have a better person than the ‘universe boss’ at the top of the order,” said Kumar Sangakkara in a radio interview.
Gayle who is set to lead the team also reportedly said, “I’ll be rallying the troops and looking to put on a show.”
The coach has also expressed his confidence in the team and is pleased with the direction in which it is heading.
“We are confident and happy with the direction we are heading at this early stage,” said former England international Paul Nixon, who led the Tallawahs to the title in 2013 before giving way to South Africa’s Mickey Arthur in 2014 and 2015.
