The Jamaican Maroons are descendants of Africans who escaped from slavery on the plantations in Jamaica. They escaped into the mountainous interior of the island to establish free communities. They ran away from their Spanish-owned plantations when the British took the Caribbean island of Jamaica from Spain in 1655.
