Senator Lindsey Graham (R.S.C) has made several utterances about the ongoing war against Russia that puts him at odds with many of the leading spokespersons of his party.
In a recent meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Graham insisted that U.S. President Joe Biden should send more weapons to Ukraine in addition to the more than $35 billion worth of weaponry and military hardware already provided.
He argued that any pullback by the U.S. at this stage in support of Ukraine would send a signal to China that it could easily take Taiwan.
“There can be no backing off of helping Ukraine because if we fail here, there goes Taiwan,” Graham told reporters.
He said further, “If you’re running for President, as a Republican or Democrat, I don’t know how you can make the argument that we’re stronger against China if we pull the plug on Ukraine – that makes zero sense. What I want the Chinese to see is that invading a neighbor is not as easy as it looks.”
He added, “The best way to protect Taiwan and world order is for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to lose.”
The truth is because of fear of Russia, the U.S. and its Western allies have not been forthcoming in their aid to Ukraine efficiently and timely.
Kudos must be given to the Ukrainians for using their old Soviet military hardware initially to hold off the marauding Russian army.
They have suffered multiple setbacks because of the hesitancy on the part of the West to supply them readily with drones, tanks, F-16 fighter jets, and other weapons to ward off the Russians.
The fact of the matter is if democracy is worth fighting for, no price should be seen as too high to pay.
Of course, many people would view the war in a myopic way as a Ukrainian battle instead of a fight for democracy – a fight to say you can’t just invade another country and claim ownership.
Those days should be viewed as far gone, and people should no longer be made to relive those bad experiences.
Lindsay holds that in order for a long-anticipated Ukraine counteroffensive to succeed, its forces need more and better armaments, such as U.S.- made F-16 fighter jets and longer-range weapons.
“There are weapons that matter, and we’ve been too slow getting weapons that matter to the Ukrainian military … my message to the Biden administration is, I appreciate what you have done. You need to do more,” said Graham.
The Senator is right on this one, and the Biden administration should not allow this moment of glory in history to pass them by.
