Reggae Boyz Seek Redemption Against Venezuela

The Reggae Boyz will be seeking to avenge their losses after succumbing to Mexico and Ecuador in their Copa America outings.

Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson is determined to pull out all the stops for a win and to bring back some pride in the Jamaican setup.

The game kicks off at 7:00 pm (Jamaica time) at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

The Boyz are already eliminated from Group B but winning this encounter will prove their readiness for greater things going forward.

“We go for this game for the win,” he stated in his pregame presser on Saturday. “Of course, we hoped and wished that we were in a different position than where we are, but it is what it is. There is good morale, and the players are happy and together, and I give them a lot of credit for the atmosphere still in the camp.”

Jamaica currently sits at the bottom of the table without a point, while Venezuela has already secured their spot in the quarter-finals with six points from victories over Ecuador and Mexico.

The coach said Venezuela is the tournament’s surprise package, but vouch for the Boyz to do well against the high flying Venezuelan team.

“Well, they are the surprise package of the tournament, I would say. We have analyzed them before, and we know they are a hard-working, honest team with great individuals. But, how they have performed, especially with the confidence they have displayed now, is impressive to see.”

He added, “For the players, it is just margins that we can control that made it that we don’t have a point today. We go into this match knowing that we can get a win for sure, but there is balance.”

Hallgrimsson argued that the experience at this level augurs well for the Boyz as this is “the closest thing to the World Cup.”

“The Copa America is probably the closest thing to the World Cup that we can participate in,” he posited. “No matter what the result will be, I think this is a really important tournament for Jamaica in working towards qualifying for the World Cup 2026.”
