Urges Nations To “Open Hearts And Doors” To Migrants
Pope Francis tells thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square that nations should ”open their hearts and open their doors” to migrants blocked at borders with no food and shelter.
Thousands of migrants have been stranded near the Greek village of Idomeni after several Balkan countries prevented desperate families from crossing.
He said, ”How is it possible that so much suffering can befall innocent men, women and children and even when they try to enter somewhere else, the doors are shut to them? They are there, at the border, because so many doors and so many hearts are closed. Immigrants today suffer in the open air, without food and cannot get in, they don’t feel welcome. I like it very much when I see that nations and leaders open their hearts and open their doors.”
More than 1.1 million migrants flowed into the European Union in 2015, and the influx continues.
