Pooran “We Still Need To Negotiate The Spinners A Bit Better”

India 162 for 4 (Rohit 40, Suryakumar 34*, Chase 2-14) beat West Indies 157 for 7 (Pooran 61, Bishnoi 2-17, Harshal 2-37) by six wickets.

Ravi Bishnoi and Rohit Sharma hand India a 1-0 lead in the first of the three-match T20I series.

This win comes on the back of a clean sweep of a three-match ODI series by India, which ended a few days ago.

The Windies at first seem poised to put up a challenging total on the board, but India’s spinners put a spoke in their wheel when they were at 72 for 2.

The introduction of leg-spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal made batting difficult for the men from the Caribbean.

However, Windies young gun Nicholas Pooran was the shining light among Windies batters with a well-made 61 runs.

“We still need to negotiate the spinners a bit better, I think today we were caught in two minds how to go about them. Whether to attack them or keep them out of the game and we got caught in both minds there,” Pooran told members of the media following the match.

Meanwhile, in a post-match interview,  Windies captain Kieron Pollard said, “Good game of cricket overall, getting down to the 19th over was good on the part of the bowlers. If I’m being honest, between overs 6 to 15 we scored too few runs. We were 15-20 runs short but if you take early wickets, you can put them under pressure. But Rohit got off quickly at the start. Of course, it’s an area we can improve (dot balls) but if you try and hit and get out for 90, the conversation will be different. Those 9 overs for 46 runs, if we had another 15-20 in that block there… it’s a matter of setting it up properly. We can dissect it till kingdom come but we have to execute. Hopefully come next game, that can happen.”

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma, said “It did (get tricky). Should have finished that off. We wanted to be a bit clinical in the end. We’re trying to do stuff in the middle didn’t work out, but happy with the win. We can take a lot of confidence. Restricting a great unit like that to 157 was a great effort by the bowlers. With the bat we were not clinical, but we can take learning.”
