According to a news release on nyu.edu website, the university received a whopping number of 75,037 applications for first-year admission, an increase of nearly 12% over last year.
The report noted that the university has been breaking application records over the past eleven years consecutively; additionally, applications have roughly doubled during the period.
It also noted that NYU has received more applications than any other private college or university in the U.S. using the Common Application.
The university will see an estimated 6,500 students enrolling at one of its three degree-granting campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, or Shanghai next fall.
The announcement comes on the heel of the opening of a new 7,400 sq. ft. Bonomi Family Admissions Center, located at 27 West 4th Street.
This new facility will accommodate significantly more requests for campus tours and information sessions.
NYU currently receives over 100,000 admissions visitors per year. The new admissions center is expected to accommodate twice as many visitors as before; previously, visitors to campus had to RSVP for tours or information sessions as much two to three months in advance to secure space.
NYU President Andrew Hamilton is impressed with the number of students expressing interest in becoming part of the NYU community.
“We are thrilled by how many young men and women want to be part of the NYU community. These numbers tell an important story: that a global, urban, rigorous liberal arts education has a strong and growing appeal to young people. From the vibrancy and diversity of urban settings to the access to internships to global learning and research opportunities, applicants to NYU know that the education they will receive here is particularly well shaped to prepare them for the widest range of 21st Century careers. We look forward to the wonderful freshman class that will come from this group of applicants,” he said.
