Many countries around the world are celebrating International Reggae Day (IRD) on Friday, July 1.

Last year, 25 countries participated in the celebrations.

Although Friday is the official IRD, celebrations will run until Saturday.

Among the events planned for this year’s celebration of IRD in Jamaica is the conference at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel’s Portland Ballroom.

“The conference will focus on both Kingston as a creative city and navigating the digital content economy. Our panelists will include David Stopps of WIPO, Los Angeles-based travel consultant Ashley Randolph; musician/producer Danny Browne; photographer Fern Foster; musicologist Junior Lincoln; and entertainment and culture minister Babsy Grange. We are expecting a great conference as we look to build the reggae brand,” Event conceptualizer Andrea Davis, reportedly.

This year’s focus will be on the benefits of Kingston being designated a Creative City by UNESCO.

The Trench Town Experience and Clarendon Live will also take place Friday night.

Other cities participating in this year’s celebrations include Honolulu, Hawaii, Beijing, China, Geneva, Switzerland, Auckland, and New Zealand.
