Attorney at Law 44-year-old Dickon Mitchell was sworn in on Friday afternoon as Grenada’s ninth Prime Minister, pledging to end nepotism, reform the electoral system and work for the betterment of the tri-island state.
Mr. Mitchell led the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a 9-6 victory over longtime political stalwart Prime Minister and New National Party (NNP) Party leader Dr. Keith Mitchell in Thursday’s general election.
He took the oath of office before Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade in the presence of his grandmother, his two children, and supporters of the party.
He said a collective approach would be needed to effectively respond to the many problems confronting Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
He encouraged all Grenadians with the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities not to shy away from becoming actively involved in public service as his government will have an open-door policy.
“The door is open… you are welcome. If you believe in serving your country…if you have the skills and talent the people of Grenada need you.
We need fresh new faces with innovative ideas driven by the common desire to make our country a better place.”
The prime minister also congratulated Dr. Keith Mitchell and his team which will form the Opposition and says he looks forward in the House of Parliament to working with the Opposition to pass necessary legislation.
