British shipping company P&O Ferries invoked condemnation for its action by firing 800 employees with the view of having them replaced with cheaper agency workers.
Employees were told via a video call to get off the ship as it was their final day of employment.
Some refused to leave their ships in protest and were forcibly removed.
P&O said it was a tough decision, but it would not be a viable business without the changes.
The government called the workers’ treatment wholly unacceptable.
