Briana Williams Wins Double At World U20 Championships

Young Jamaican sprinter 16-year-old Brianna Williams got chutzpah.

She was in a no-nonsense mood as she took the sprint double winning both the women’s 100 and 200 meters at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Williams clocked a Championship record and new personal best of 22.50 seconds to win the 200 meters event ahead of American Lauren Raine Williams 23.09 while Poland’s Natyna Kotwila finished third in a national record and personal best 23.21 seconds.

Williams had earlier upset the gold medal favored American Twanisha Terry to win the 100 meters race in 11.16s. Terry, who had set championship record 11.03s in the semis had to settle for the silver medal in 11.19s.

Jamaica’s other medal on the day came in the men’s 4 x 100m where the team of Xavier Nairne, Christopher Taylor, Jevaughn Matherson, and Michael Stephens clocked a National Junior Record of 38.96 seconds with the U.S. taking gold in 38.88 seconds. Jamaica remains second in the medal table with 9 medals, 3 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze.
