Biden Leads In Battle Ground States But Can’t Ignore Trump’s Juggernaut

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s national polling lead over President Trump has taken a downward turn.

This comes after the Republicans wrapped up their National Convention late last week.

According to a new Morning Consult poll, Biden is leading with 50 percent support among likely voters, compared with 44 percent for Trump, with another 7 percent undecided.

The latest poll shows a narrower margin than the 52-42 lead that Biden enjoyed in the same poll on Aug. 23, a day before the Republican Convention got going.

The narrowing stands in contrast with a similar poll conducted after last week’s Democratic National Convention, which showed that Biden’s lead over Trump was statistically unchanged.

Biden still holds a larger lead over Trump than Hillary Clinton did after the 2016 conventions.

The convention is said to have boosted Trump’s standing with key constituencies, cutting Biden’s lead with suburban voters from 14 points to 8 points and expanding Trump’s lead among white voters from 2 points to 8 points.

However, Biden’s lead among Black and Hispanic voters grew.

The Morning Consult poll surveyed 4,035 likely voters Friday and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

The electoral system, however, is what makes the difference in electing a  U.S. president, each state is given a number of votes based on its population.

A total of 538 electoral college votes are up for grabs, so a candidate needs to hit 270 to win.

In 2016, for example, Hillary Clinton led in the polls and won nearly three million more votes than Donald Trump, but she still lost – that’s because the U.S. uses an electoral college system, so winning the most votes doesn’t always win you the election.

The Trump campaign knows this and is hitting the battleground states with their most powerful weapon, the mouth of the President.

Currently, polls in the battleground states look good for Joe Biden, but he can’t afford to remain in his basement and take things for granted.

The Democrats will have to summon all their ‘big guns’ and political ‘smarts’ to stop the Republican Juggernaut — Donald Trump.
