Barbados Prime Minister Appeals For New Debt Repayment System

The Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley has called for a new debt repayment system for Caribbean countries similar to what was given to Britain after World Wars I and II.

Britain borrowed heavily back then to finance its war efforts with moratoriums granted on loans.

The debt repayment system allowed Britain to have the fiscal space to return to a path of development.

Mottley argued that given the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on middle-income countries’ economies, provisions should made by international financial partners to help.
