It is often said that food is good for the soul but it is also good for the brain. Here are some foods that when eaten will improve mental health.
1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are lycopene packed, that is they are loaded with antioxidant which provides protection against the kind of free radical that harm cells in the brain.
2. Blueberries
These berries are not only blue, but they relive one from having the blues. The consumption of blueberries is said to be effective in improving or delaying short term memory lost.
3. Broccoli
This is a great source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower.
4. Fish
Eat fish! This is one of the few ways one can get Essential Fatty Acid (EFAs) into the body. The most effective omega-3 fats occur naturally in oily fish as EPA and DHA. The main sources of oily fish include salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards, and kippers.
Low DHA levels have been linked to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss.
The American Heart Association recommends 1 gram of EPA + DHA daily from fish oil if you have existing heart disease and 500 milligrams daily to prevent the disease. The ratio of EPA to DHA in fish oil varies.
5. Pumpkin seeds
These little seeds packed a big punch. Just a fistful of them a day is all one needs to get one’s recommended daily amount of zinc, vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills.
